Giving Back

Our first social responsibility is to look after the safety and well-being of our staff. However, we realize that this world is home to millions who are less fortunate than we are. The Spruceland Millworks family strives to lend a compassionate hand to those in need in communities around the world. For this reason, we seek out opportunities to lighten the burdens of the orphaned, the homeless and the hungry.

Spruceland’s shareholders and employees have contributed a large percentage of their earnings towards the construction of over a dozen orphanages, housing over 1000 of the world’s most destitute children. Every year, our staff sponsor a growing number of these children.

Dominican Republic Village Project

We have also been privileged to partner with La Fundacion el Samaritano in the construction of Villa Spruceland Paraiso, in the Dominican Republic. Every dollar donated by staff is matched by our owners, and employees are given time off to travel to the Dominican to personally build the homes they’ve funded.

In October of 2012, we celebrated the village’s completion and inauguration, after three years of fundraising and construction. This would not have been possible without the amazing generosity of our staff, friends, and families, and the partnership of La Fundacion el Samaritano.

This village of 206 homes provides a place to live for hundreds of Dominicans and Haitians struggling to escape poverty. Its school is full of happy, learning children. Its medical centre distributes medicines and treats diseases and injuries. Its church provides a place for worship and spiritual nourishment, and its vocational training centre trains adult students in skills that allow them to support their families. It is our goal to provide hope for the hopeless, break the generational chain of poverty, and provide a more prosperous future for the poorest of the poor.

Moving forward, we are now raising funds to purchase a small farming plot for each home in the village, along with the tools, training and seed needed to cultivate them. We are also in the process of acquiring enough land to build another 500 homes.
